I spent a few days in the Mazankowski in April following a heart attack, and a full day and night in Emergency before being admitted, The night in Emergency was long, and even the following day I could not be admitted to the cardiac floor since it was full. I can't speak factually to the reasons for this, but I wonder about staffing numbers and beds, and provincial funding priorities?
Throughout the many assessments and treatments in Emergency and the hospital ward, including angioplasty, the health care professionals were absolutely wonderful. They were consistently capable and caring, and they did everything they could to keep me informed and comfortable. This was true for the fellow patients that I witnessed as well. The part that concerned me was that often these professionals were so busy; they seemed to be flying from one room and task to another, and I noted several times when the nurses were rushed away from talking with or helping patients sooner than they seemed to wish.
The people involved as health care professionals were stellar; in many cased I would say amazing. They are vital to our families and to our society, and at this time I believe they are too few, and overworked.
