My journey navigating care in Alberta over the past two years has been filled with challenges, but it’s also been marked by extraordinary kindness and dedication. It began while I was overseas, recovering and preparing for the trek back home after a sudden cancer diagnosis. During that time, Erin emerged as a true beacon of hope. She coordinated my care with incredible precision, working closely with my friends—who themselves were based in other provinces—to ensure everything was in place. Erin’s commitment amazed my friends, with her prompt call-backs and willingness to go the extra mile. She was instrumental in setting up my first consultation, and her efforts brought a sense of stability during a whirlwind of uncertainty.
From then on, the TBCC oncology team became my lifeline. Dr. Bisch, my primary oncologist, has been the foundation of my care and truly remarkable in every way. Patient and understanding beyond measure, Dr. B skillfully managed the emotional rollercoaster of my treatment, including my moments of frustration and anxiety. Their calm demeanor, reassuring presence, and ability to explain every detail with clarity made me feel empowered and supported. Dr. B was not just a doctor but a steadfast guide, whose compassion transformed my experience from one of fear to one of hope and healing.
The rest of the oncology team, including Dr. Mateshaytis, Dr. Glaze, and Dr. Nelson, provided care that was both expert and heartfelt. Dr. Mateshaytis radiated warmth and confidence, instilling a sense of calm during even the most complex decisions. Dr. Glaze’s compassion made me feel valued beyond being just a patient. The TBCC Oncology team treated me with humanity and kindness, ensuring I never felt alone in this journey. Together, they formed a team that uplifted me in every sense.
My stubborn post-op complication decided to make itself at home in my body, presenting yet another challenge in my recovery. The triage team rose to the occasion, responding promptly and efficiently every time, creating a sense of security during a period that could easily have been overwhelming. The radiology team deserves particular praise, especially Dr. Stefan Przybojewski, whose innovation and willingness to explore global studies led to a breakthrough against all odds. Despite the complications I faced post-surgery, he managed to adapt and deliver exceptional results—truly a miracle worker in my eyes.
Behind the scenes, Michelle and April in the admin offices brought a human touch to the process. Their kindness and efficiency made everything run smoothly, and their warmth made each interaction feel personal and comforting.
I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the many other remarkable teams who contributed to my care. The TBCC pharmacy team ensured that every prescription was handled with care and precision, while the Holy Cross oncology physiotherapy team played a key role in helping me regain strength and resilience. The Alberta Precision Lab team at the Gulf Canada location provided accurate and timely results that informed my care, and the Mayfair Diagnostics team offered impeccable support throughout my treatment. Finally, Wellspring Alberta brought a sense of community and comfort, offering invaluable support during the tougher moments of my journey.
They practically became my honorary family—because let’s face it, I spent more time with them than with my actual loved ones. They witnessed me at my worst—frazzled, emotional, and feeling like a hot mess—but never once flinched in their kindness or care. It’s almost as if they had a secret superpower for turning chaos into calm. Their support was like being wrapped in a cozy, invisible blanket of comfort, making me feel at home even in the most challenging moments.
It’s hard not to feel like I’ve been surrounded by a team of medical angels, swooping in with expertise and compassion to make the impossible happen. Their collective brilliance didn’t just ensure I was cared for—they lifted me up, gave me hope, and helped me envision brighter days ahead. Truly, Alberta seems to have no shortage of these earthbound angels who not only heal but also somehow manage to sprinkle a bit of magic along the way. I feel incredibly lucky to have been carried forward by their dedication and grace, turning what could have been a daunting experience into a story of triumph and resilience.
Are you wondering—do I actually sound thrilled about being diagnosed with the dreaded C? Well, my care team somehow made it feel like I’d won a golden ticket! They turned this journey into one smooth, friendly ride, making an overwhelming experience feel almost effortless.
PS: Two years in, and you’d think I’d have mastered the art of navigating the maze that is the Special Services Building, where I was treated—but nope, I kept trying to avoid getting lost hopelessly. But now, I’ve become such a pro at navigating the floors of the Arthur E. Child Building that I might as well moonlight as its unofficial tour guide!
